The Instructional Strategies SRIG mission is to promote an understanding of instructional strategies research in music education and its application in the teaching of music.

#1: Voting for the chair-elect position

Two nominations were made and accepted for the 2012-2014 chair-elect position. This person will work with incoming chair Dr. Jacque Henninger during this time, then will take over as chair for the 2014-2016 biennium. Candidates are presented below in alphabetical order. After reading about both candidates, please place an “X” next to the name of the person you would like to vote for in the box below. Candidate 1: Dr. Lisa Maynard

Lisa Maynard is Assistant Professor of String Music Education at James Madison University where she works with music education majors in string technique, string literature, instructional methodology, and introductory music education classes, and assists with student teacher supervision.  In addition, Dr. Maynard teaches and supervises graduate students at the masters and doctoral level, and serves as Master Teacher and Director of the James Madison University String Project.  Prior to her appointment, Dr. Maynard served as Assistant Professor of Music Education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas and as a Visiting Instructor of Music Education at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Dr. Maynard is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin.  Her dissertation was entitled The Role of Repetition in the Practice Sessions of Artist Teachers and Their Students.  Maynard’s articles have appeared in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Teaching Music, Southwestern Musician, Texas Music Education Research, Florida Music Director, and Teaching Music through Performance in Orchestra (Volumes II & III).  Her professional contributions have included service as Secretary and Membership Chair for the Texas Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, member of the Research Committee for the Texas Music Education Research Journal, Board member of the Virginia Chapter of the ASTA, member of the College Advisory Committee for VASTA, and member of the Research Committee of ASTA.

 

Candidate 2: Dr. Jennifer S. Walter

Dr. Jennifer Stewart Walter is currently an Associate Professor of Music Education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, specializing in instrumental music education. She has received degrees in music education from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Walter taught elementary, middle, and high school band in North Carolina and Tennessee and she is an experienced clinician. She is also active in the field of music education research and has presented her research at state, regional, national and international conferences. Dr. Walter's current research involves the level of noise exposure experienced by music teachers and students, how to develop pre-service teachers’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions toward teaching, and studying the relationships between cooperating teachers, pre-service teachers, and university faculty.  Dr. Walter lives in Greensboro, North Carolina with husband Donny, son Andrew, and daughter Charlie.

Our SRIG’s session, "The Teaching and Learning of Intelligent Music Practice" is scheduled for Saturday, March 31st at 8 AM. Panelists are Dr. Sarah Allen of Southern Methodist University, Dr. Roseanne Rosenthal of the Vandercook College of Music, and Dr. Laura Stambaugh of Georgia Southern University. You won’t want to miss this!
